A Q&A with Renegade

5th September 2022

After another astonishing performance from PLB new boys, Pin City, we had the honour of sitting down with a true gent of the game and Rollers captain, Jamie "Renegade" Regan. It's been a while since our PLB Weekly correspondants have set foot in Pin City but you could really feel the excitement on the streets with fans continuing to wear PCR colours days after Game 3.

Here's what happened when we picked Renegade's brains over martinis on the practice lanes.

Q. 3 games in and Pin City Rollers have shocked Planet Pins with some incredible performances. What's the mood in the Rollers camp right now?

Ebullient! Forget the camp, the whole city is going nuts! With a growing sense of momentum we’re also starting to see the kind of passion & engagement from the squad that we so admire about the incumbents.

I have to confess: after attending the Rookie Invitational I returned to Pin City with my tail between my legs. Yet I was determined to build a team worthy of our great city - a city steeped in pin-smashing history and named after the legendary days of the 1980s Rampant Rollers. There’s certainly a feeling that we can return to where we belong.

**PLB Fact Checker - the last great dynasty of Pin City bowing, the Rampant Rollers are well-known for their total ownership of the 1980s securing 7 back to back PLB titles until the tragically unsuccessful signing of bowling journeyman, Cat Daddy, who single handedly brought down the fall of the empire.**

Q. There's been a lot of squad rotation for PCR over the last 3 games. Has that been a deliberate strategy and will the Pin City starting VI start to settle down over the coming months?

Truthfully: far from deliberate. Building a squad from scratch is no easy task, especially when Pin City’s love of the sport has been battered as badly as a pin on the end of a Davey Slapz slap. Rumours were circulating that it was the end of the lane for us.

I searched high, mostly low actually, to recruit even a semblance of talent. Tomahawk committed early, keen to chop pins over wood. Our beloved Bandit was out of contract in Bombay and eager to spice things up abroad. Takes more than two to tango though so in came the ringers: Foxtrot was encouraged by early evidence emerging that baldness is linked to better bowling. On shore leave for the summer, Commodore was happy to leave the high seas behind in favour of the high life; he’s found it in abundance at the pinnacle of PLB. Completing that tentative first line-up was our young Safa sizzler ‘No-Show’ who - to the astonishment of millions each week - continues to show.

Rotation has enabled us to identify the ringers that are now full signings, whilst keeping competitors on their toes. Really put a cat amongst the pigeons when a bowler as exceptional as Lenonce prances out.

Q. Your new signing, The Big Lenonceski, bagged himself a debutant Turkey. The pundits are excited about this academy prospect - is there more to come from the highly regarded Pin City youth system?

Without a team in the PLB for decades we have to dig deeper to find talent in this city, buts it’s certainly there. With some level heads in the squad, there’s a real chance for youth to come through the ranks.

Famed for downing tins, we know that freshers will excel at a key facet of this great sport.

Q. Pin City have been somewhat angelic so far this season but there are some rumours brewing. Most recently, rumours of a fungal foot infection spreading throughout the team. Can you shed any light on this?

They call me Renegade for a reason: rules are there to be broken, man. Bare foot bowling allows me to be at one with the lanes in a way that a hooved hurler simply cannot. Just look how well the adoption of two shoes is going for my Riders counterpart.

Q. Pin City have seen a huge surge in fans since joining the Premier League and it looks like a lot of them have come from the fickle support of Riders of Rowans. Do you think that's down to your leadership style being significantly more inspirational than Davie 2 Shoes?

Look, for all the jokes, we’re here to demolish tins & pins, not CAPtains. Without the leadership of 2 Shoes and Pins Magee the PLB wouldn’t be where it is today so there’s mutual respect. That said, you’d have to be as slow as a Nae Strikes bowl not to see how much the Riders have buckled under the pressure of our admission. Can’t help but wonder if they’ve misinterpreted Mandela’s famous quote about being “better to lead from behind”.
