A Q&A with Cat Daddy

10th May 2022

It's only a few days until the PLB season finale. A momentous triple header that will see Riders of Rowan's travelling to Rowan's to take on Pinter Milan. The Pinter boys aren't short of any patter but they are trailing by 8 points going into the final pindown. You'd be forgiven for thinking that this article should dive into the tactics and lineups of each side, however much of the chatter on PLB forums this week has focussed on the somewhat controversial signing of Andrew Gillespie.

The younger readers out there may not have heard of Gillespie but there's no doubt your fathers, and even grandfathers, will know him intimately. A true journeyman of the sport, Gillespie has always had his critics. That's still the case today with one Riders fan describing him as "an old, greying labrador suffering from hip dysplasia". He is indeed still injury prone and certainly in the twilight of his career but Pinter captain Pins Magee must've seen something in the old dog to bring him in this late in the season.

Now going by the name of Cat Daddy, we sat down with Pinter's newest recruit. Here's what he had to say.

1. You’re a seasoned pro in the bowling world but have never had a chance to break through to one of the Big 2. How are you feeling about this opportunity at Pinter?

"You've got that right.... More seasoned than a dry aged brisket. It's not about chance. Chance would be a fine thing. I never think about how I'm feeling.... I think about how I'm feline. I'm the Cat Daddy and I will always land on my feet."

2. A tough choice between Pinter and Riders. What was it about Magee’s leadership style that clinched it for you?

"Magee seems comfortable in his own skin. I would also feel comfortable if it were me in his skin."

3. You’ve been making quite a name for yourself out in the Oxford Division 1 with regular first team bowling. How has this improved your game and what do you think you can bring to Pinter?

"Back in 79 I was hanging out with Dick Weber and Don Carter. There was big pinting back then - before the regulations came in. I was flying high. High all the time in fact. But like Icarus, I flew a little too close to the sun. I found myself in the gutter both on and off the lanes. But I've got nine lives. Oxford has been my port in the storm. I'm tossing rocks again and the pins are tumbling - and that's all that matters on lane day."

**PLB Fact Checker - Richard Anthony Weber was a ten pin bowling professional and a founding member of the Professional Bowlers Association. Along with Don Carter, Weber is widely regarded as professional bowling's first superstar.**

4. Pinter shirt sales have gone through the roof since announcing the signing of Cat Daddy. What is it about your style that appeals to the fans and have you got a message for the Pinter loyal?

"People want rock and roll - and I roll the rocks. The pride looks out for the pride. Cat Daddy will provide."

5. We’ve all heard the rumours about your historic beef with Riders captain, Davie 2 Shoes. What do you think is going through his head knowing that he’ll be seeing Cat Daddy on the lanes in the imminent future?

"I've got no beef with the wee man. I will happily shake his tiny hand.... I'll even show him how to bring up the gutter guards - and where to find the roll ramp. Everyone has to start somewhere. Have you ever encountered a lion in the wild? In Kenya, I stood in the presence of an apex predator. I had no gun and no gaurds. It stared me directly in the eyes. In that moment I knew that the situation was out of my control and that my fate had already been decided by a creature that could tear me apart in seconds. I imagine Davie is feeling a bit like that."
